Nirmala belongs to an elite orthodox ‘ Aranmanai ‘ family in Kumbakonam. Balakrishnan, her father was a great lover of fine arts. In Spite of severe opposition, he arranged for tutoring in Bharatanatyam to his daughter Nirmala. To get recognized in the field of dance, he sought her career in the film world. Debuting through C. V. Sridhar’s Vennira Aadai in 1965, she has appeared in over 200 films in Tamil. She has acted in around 50 films in Malayalam with the screen name Usha Kumari. Three-hour thematic presentation in Lord Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram

The hallowed precincts of Lord Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram continuously reverberated with the jingling of the anklet bells of Bharatanatyam artists, in full sync with the jathi and thalam of the nattuvangam artists, on Tuesday night. It was a three-hour long thematic performance

Performance at Delhi Tamil Sangam

Ms Nirmala was Invited by the Members of Delhi Tamil Sangam to have a Bharatanatyam performance for the Tamil Audience in Delhi. The event was attended by some of Important people of Tamil Community In Delhi. Her performance was received with a thunderous applause by the Audience

Radhayin Kannan - thematic dance ballet

Ms Nirmala, with her desciples of  Tiruvallur and Chennai had an Opportunity to Perform an exclusively Choreographed dance ballet titled " Radhayin Kannan " On the 1st day of the year.This ballet was performed on behalf of Delhi Tamil Sangam Rotary clubs etc.

Bharati Kannamma

Bharati Kannamma is a 105 – minute dance ballet based entirely on the songs of Late Subramania Bharati.Sponsored by the Government of Tamilnadu on the Occasion of the Bharati Centenary Year and has been staged more than 80 times.

Sri Aandal

A ballet of 90 – minutes duration based on Saint Aandal, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Aandal is also considered as the incarnation of Mahalakshmi. The lyrics have been adapted from the ancient texts.


This is 100 – minute dance ballet adapted from the original Sanskrit text and translated into Tamil. It was sponsored by the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.

This Story is from the ancient sacred Hindu text, the “Skandapuranam’, in which Lord Skanda, the second and favourite son of Lord Siva, marries Valli, a beautiful tribal girl.
